Advanced genomic testing
With genetic analyses of the tumour itself, researchers have advanced the developments in recent years. These even more focused analyses analyze the tumor’s DNA profile to look for genetic anomalies that can be linked to medication therapy that would not have otherwise been taken into account.
This paradigm change is aimed at providing cancer patients with genuinely precise care. Advanced genetic testing focuses on examining a single individual—the patient whose tumor is being tested—instead of practicing one-size-fits-all therapy, which can result in needless and even dangerous therapies for certain individuals.
You may have seen or heard advertisements for the many businesses that now provide a service that allows you to use DNA testing to find out more about yourself or your family. The “direct-to-consumer” (DTC) genetic testing business was estimated to be worth $117 million globally in 2017. This suggests that millions of individuals are buying these tests. In contrast to clinical genetic testing, where a healthcare physician orders the tests and gives the findings, such as for cancer [see Cancer Genomics] and prenatal screening [see NIPT], DTC genomic tests can be acquired online or even at your local drugstore.
Using such DTC genomic testing to determine family lineage or genealogy is a common use [see Human Origins and Ancestry]. For instance, the business History.com began as a location to explore historical and family documents for genealogical hints and has now evolved to offer genetic testing for individuals looking to learn more about their biological ancestry. More than seven million people had bought the test from one firm alone as of February 2018. To continue reading please visit GoToKnow.
